Life's Magic Chapter 17

16 Mitch
"I still don't get it. Try explaining harder."

Fuck! What's her problem? I clenched my hands at the sides, trying so hard not to pull her close to me.

"You're thinking of someone else while you're with me. So I thought I might as well spend this vacation alone rather than being with you who doesn't seem to enjoy my company."

What? It took me a moment to realize she was talking about our conversation at the beach. About my presumed girlfriend troubles when, in fact, she'd occupied my mind the entire time. I suddenly want to laugh at the irony of our situation.

Blowing a harsh breath, I pinched the bridge of my nose before staring at her again. My God. Was Donatella jealous of the mystery girl? If she was, I think it's really hot. And I think she's not thinking straight.

Her sobs went louder when I didn't answer. "I know I'm being selfish, Mitch. I'm really sorry. I just... I know I shouldn't have done it. But if I try to explain, you might not understand either. I just hate the thought that you might one day leave me, too. I mean, mom is gone and it still hurts, you know. I don't... I can't lose you, too."

Closing the distance between us, I crashed her into my chest in a tight hug. "You're not going to lose me, Donatella. Ever."

She hugged me back, sobbing on my chest while I caressed her hair and back for comfort. When her tears finally ebbed, I carried her inside her room and into the connecting bath we shared, leaving her to do her nightly ritual.

When she came out of it a few moments later, she looked refreshed and had changed into her jammies. She pleaded that I watch her sleep, so I took the left side of the bed, couldn't really sleep at all. Not when my fucking dick was acting up again.

"I guess we're going back home tomorrow?" She whispered in the dark.

"Why?" I frowned.

"Because I ruined tonight."

"Come here." I opened my arms for her and she quickly settled in with her cheek on my chest. "This vacation is my gift for you. You decide whatever you like to do. We don't really have to leave and just enjoy the rest of our time here. But if you plan to go, it's still up to you. I'm sorry if I ever made you feel unwanted." I planted a kiss on her head, tightening my hold around her.

She sighed before looking me up through the low light of the lampshade. "I'm sorry about what I said." She touched my mouth with her fingertips but I shook my head in response. "Thank you."

She leaned closer, kissing me on the mouth. Only this time, her lips lingered a little longer because I held her lower lip between my own. My heart was slamming beneath my shirt. I wouldn't be surprised if she could actually feel it against her own chest.

"I love you." She whispered.

"I love you, too." Friendship be damned but I need to take her tonight.
